One of the most beautiful books I ever laid my eyes upon…upon reading his biography I found he had some characteristics I seriously disagree with, but nonetheless, he was a genius artist with enormous passion..and I happen to have a soft spot for those ;) $%^&^&*
Kunstformen der Natur, a collection of 100 prints by German biologist (and all around Renaissance man) Ernst Haeckel, illustrating a wide variety of organisms—many of which Haeckel himself discovered and named. The illustrations range from sketches to lithographs to watercolours and many put heavy emphasis on symmetry.
I don’t know where to begin. To say Haeckel’s illustrations were influential would be a gross understatement. Their influenced stretched across fields from art nouveau to architecture and even literature—word has it that the likes of Lovecraft and Giger were inspired by his illustrations, although plate 90 is not the best example to support that argument.
This set of illustrations is definitely his most well-known work outside the realm of science, and IMO one of his greatest contributions to the collective consciousnes—naming and describing thousands of species notwithstanding. Best of all, the whole collection can be browsed online or downloaded as a PDF.
